The gushing water cascading down the rocky cliffs fills the surrounding with a misty aura, leaving everyone awestruck. The name of this place itself is derived from “hoge” meaning smoke and “kal” meaning rock, indicating the misty appearance when the water hits the rocks. This is a popular tourist attraction which has gained prominence throughout the years and continues to be praised because of its natural splendour.

The historical significance of Hogenakkal lies in Sangam Literature where it has been mentioned as Thalaineer Aruvi. In terms of the cultural significance, the local communities celebrate this waterfall for being  therapeutic in nature, healing illnesses due to its minerals.

Distance from Bangalore and Reaching Time

This destination is approximately 180 kms away from Bangalore and usually takes 4 to 5 hours by car. Other transport options are also available, such as buses which usually take around 6 to 7 hours. The Bangalore to Hogenakkal Falls distance is short enough to make it a great day trip or weekend getaway.

Best Season and Time to Visit

The best time to visit Hogenakkal has to be the monsoon months from July to September. The rain increases the surge in water, making the falls more majestic as they gush down on the rocks.

  • Hogenakkal Waterfalls – The main attraction of this place, the Hogenakkal waterfall is considered one of the oldest waterfalls because of its carbonite rocks. Cascading down from a height of around 20 meters, it fills the surrounding with a white, foggy and misty aura. Praised by the local communities for its therapeutic qualities, it is said to have healing properties due to the mineral contents. The surrounding areas of the waterfalls are ideal for walks and photography. 
  • Melagiri Hills – Along the lines of the Eastern Ghats, the Melagiri Hills is a prominent local attraction near Hogenakkal. Comprising many trekking trails, this place is marked for its natural beauty and vibrant hue. During the monsoon, the rain showers enhance the lushful greenery of this area. Housing diverse fauna and flora, many migratory birds also fly over this region. The panoramic views which the Melagiri Hills offer are stunning, leaving an unforgettable image.
  • Crocodile Rehabilitation Centre – During your stay at Hogenakkal, do not forget to check out the Crocodile Rehabilitation Centre. This conservation centre sheds light on their importance, for example the Mugger crocodile  and contribution in the ecosystem. It offers them their natural environment to grow and thrive in, letting visitors observe them up close amidst safety measures. 
  • Mettur Dam – Located a few kilometers away from Hogenakkal, the Mettur Dam is one of the largest dams in India. From water supply to irrigation, it is a multi functional dam used for crops and drinking alike. The Stanley Reservoir in this dam offers beautiful views of the surrounding accompanied by the serene environment. The project is a beacon of Indian engineering and an architectural marvel.

  • The most exciting and famous activity here is boating which is allowed during the pleasant months when the current is not too strong. The coracles are traditional, circular boats made from bamboo and whose base has a plastic sheeting.
  • Navigate around the Kaveri river and capture memorable sights. Passing through the rocks and experiencing the cascading waterfall offer an exhilarating experience.
  • For those who are not inclined towards the water, the Melagiri hills welcome them with astonishing trekking trails. Suitable for beginners, the trails offer serene views of the surroundings.
