About Bandipur
A premier destination for wildlife and nature enthusiasts, Bandipur National Park was established in 1974 as a tiger reserve under Project Tiger, a pioneering initiative for tiger conservation in India. This renowned Bandipur Tiger Reserve is closely connected with other wildlife sanctuaries, including Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, and Nagarhole National Park. Bandipur National Park, a core component of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, spans approximately 874 sq. kilometers, making it one of the top destinations in Karnataka to experience diverse wildlife. Here, visitors can encounter tigers, elephants, leopards, bears, and over 200 species of birds. Additionally, the park is home to endangered species such as Indian rock pythons, sloth bears, and four-horned antelopes.
Historical Significance
Historically, the region served as a private hunting ground for the Maharajas of Mysore. With the introduction of wildlife conservation laws, Bandipur was designated as a tiger reserve in 1974, becoming a crucial part of Project Tiger.

Bandipur National Park is approximately 219 kilometers away from Bangalore by car. The journey takes around 4 to 5 hours, depending on ideal traffic conditions.
Best Season and Time to Visit
The best time to visit Bandipur is from September to April as the climate is cool and present. The monsoon months from July to September would not be an issue but the rain may become an obstacle.

- Gopalaswamy Betta: This hill is at an elevation of 1,454 meters with a temple dedicated to Lord Krishna at the top. It covers an area of approximately 321 sq km and is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. The sanctuary’s diverse ecosystems range from thick forests to grasslands, supporting diverse wildlife. Mudumalai’s location right at the border of both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu makes it an essential extension of the Bandipur experience.
- Maravakandy Dam – Maravakandy Dam is located near the entrance of Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary. The dam was built on Moyar River and it serves not only as an important source of water for irrigation but also for feeding people living around it. In addition, it forms a tranquil picnic spot where visitors can relax after visiting the reserves. The cool ambience combined with picturesque water bodies and hills makes this reserve a perfect place to unwind.
