Shimoga, officially known as Shivamogga, is the ideal blend of nature and culture. Be it the lush landscapes, dense forests and scenic waterfalls, Shimoga is a tranquil restoration for everyone. The region is rich in wildlife safaris and historical landmarks, often referred to as  the “Gateway to Malnad.

Historical Significance

The historical significance of Shimoga dates back to ancient times. It has been ruled by several rulers under the South Indian dynasties, the reign of Keladi Nayakas being the most prominent. 

Distance from Bangalore and Reaching Time

Shimoga is approximately 306 kilometers from Bangalore. The drive from Bangalore to Shimoga takes around 6-7 hours by car. Trains and buses are also available. 

Best Season and Time to Visit

The best time to visit Shimoga is between September and November. The monsoon thunder showers enhance the waterfalls, increasing the surge in water. Visitors may indulge in monsoon treks to or wait for the post monsoon months for a calm experience.

Local Attractions

  1. Jog Falls: The Jog Falls, a short dive from Murudeshwara is an awe inspiring sight, one of the highest falls in India. They cascade down 830 feet and consist of four separate parts –  Raja, Rani, Rover, and Rocket each having their own characteristics. These falls can be seen at their best during monsoon, the thundersowers increasing the surge in water and raging down the rocks.Surrounded by dense vegetation on all sides; this massive waterfall presents both adventure opportunities for thrill seekers as well as beautiful spots for photographers alike.
  2. Agumbe – Agumbe also known as the  “Cherrapunji of South India” because of its high rainfall is a fascinating hill station. This is one of the best hill stations near Bangalore appealing to visitors who want to enjoy a rejuvenating experience. The rainforests and waterfalls of this place combined with the natural beauty and ecosystem are very attractive. The trekking trails of  Kodachadri are an extremely famous monsoon trek alongside the Sunrise view point for mesmerising views. Several waterfalls near Agumbe, including Barkana Falls, Jogigundi Falls, and Onake Abbi Falls, have seen an increased flow due to the recent heavy rainfall. 
  3. Kodachadri – Kodachadri is a mountain located in the Western Ghats and is the eighth highest peak in the range, standing at 1,343 meters above sea level. It is a favourite spot for those who love trekking and adventure. The trek includes climbing through lush vegetation and waterfalls, crossing meadows. The Kodachadri mountain also holds cultural importance, as it is said to be the place where philosopher Adi Shankaracharya meditated. The trek is moderately challenging, taking around 6 to 8 hours. The height offers stunning views of the nearby hills and the Arabian Sea.
  4. Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari – The Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari Wildlife Park is a must-see for wildlife lovers. Surrounded by dense vegetation over an area of about 200 hectares, this park allows visitors to view lions, tigers, and many other animals in real time. On a traditional safari, you enter the main area of the woods and have the chance to see these magnificent creatures from the comfortable and protected space of a jeep. The area also houses other animal species, such as leopards and various deer, along with numerous bird species. Thus, it is also a favourite spot for wildlife photography and adventure.
  5. Sakrebailu Elephant Camp – The Sakrebailu Elephant Camp is located around 14 kilometers away from the city of Shimoga and serves as an elephant treatment and training centre. Experts at the camp are actively involved in training and caring for the domestic elephants. The campsite allows visitors to get up close and personal with the resident elephants, see them play in the river, and observe their behaviours and conservation efforts. Early mornings are the ideal time to visit, as this is when the elephants are first taken to the river for their daily routines.

These sanctuaries offer visitors a chance to spot tigers, leopards and lions in their natural habitat. There are a variety of other animals that can be spotted too including spot deers, peacocks and a plethora of birds.   • Sightseeing: The region is home to several sightseeing and historical spots. The Shivappa Nayaka Palace Museum is a prominent place that offers glimpses into the rich architectural history. This dates back to the Keladi Nayaka dynasty, providing a diverse and immersive experience.
