Hassan is a lovely city, often considered the land of history, antique temples, and rich architecture. This area is well known for the numerous preserved Hoysala temples, thus occupying an important position on the cultural map of the country. The architectural features of the temples at Belur and Halebid, with their exquisite sculptures, attract tourists who are interested in history and art. It is also a center for spirituality, with Shravanabelagola, one of the popular Jain pilgrimage sites, as well as other Jain locations situated very conveniently. 

Historical Significance

Hassan is deeply rooted in history with the region dating back to the 11th century. It was a prominent part of the Hoysala Empire and was its capital once upon a time. The ancient temples at Belur and Halebid stand to this day, showcasing the brilliancy of Hoysala architecture.

1. Belur – Belur is best known for housing the famous Chennakeshava Temple, a remarkable example of Hoysala architecture dating back to the 12th century. The intricately carved stone walls feature soapstone images of gods and goddesses from Hindu epics, dance performances, and animals. Parts of the temple include smaller temples and a fascinating displaceable pillar. Belur was once a deputy capital of the Hoysala Empire, where the architectural style was characterized by an unusual star-shaped platform and extremely detailed cornices. Unsurprisingly, the temple remains an active place of worship, where pious devotees and historical admirers flock. An important occasion is the chariot festival, Rathotsava, which has been celebrated every year without fail and with spectacular zeal.
2. Halebidu –Halebidu, once the stunning capital of the Hoysala Empire, is best known for its Hoysaleswara Temple. This temple, dating back to the Hoysala period of the 12th century, is richly decorated with beautiful and creative crafts, featuring intricate carvings from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranas. The temple illustrates the unique aspects of Hoysala architecture with its detailed friezes and eight-pointed star platforms. Despite suffering significant defacement from fierce invasions, the charm of the existing structures remains alluring. Another nearby temple, the Kedareshwara Temple, also from the same era, possesses beautiful decorations.
3. Shravanabelagola – Shravanabelagola is one of the holiest places for Jains, renowned for the 17-meter Gomateshwara statue. This statue of Lord Bahubali, carved from a single granite stone, symbolizes renunciation, self-discipline, and emancipation. The site also features a hill called Vindhyagiri, which requires ascending 600 steps to reach a breathtaking view of the surrounding area. The region is home to numerous ancient Jain temples, some of which are over a thousand years old. The Mahamastakabhisheka festival, held every 12 years, is significant for drawing devotees from around the world for the sacred bathing of the Gomateshwara statue.
4. Gorur Dam – Gorur Dam, situated on the Hemavathi River, is a great place for relaxation due to its natural beauty and lush vegetation. The dam was initially constructed for the purpose of providing irrigation and water supply, but it has now become a popular site for leisure. During the monsoon season, when the water level in the dam rises, reaching all the spill levels and overflowing, it creates picturesque scenes that many people enjoy capturing from various vantage points, both around and inside the dam. The area is also ideal for bird watching, as many birds can be seen near the water. Unlike other popular attractions, this region is not as congested, allowing visitors to escape into nature’s embrace and simply relax.
5. Hasanamba Temple – The Hasanamba Temple, constructed in honour of Goddess Hasanamba, is one of the few temples in the state of Karnataka with a history dating back to the twelfth century. The temple opens only once a year for about two weeks during Diwali, attracting a large number of worshippers seeking blessings. The temple’s name, ‘Hasanamba,’ is derived from the belief that the goddess always appears happy and is affectionate towards her devotees.
