About Karighatta
The very name, Karighatta signifies the blackish hill that stands at an elevation of 2697 feet above sea level. It offers panoramic views of the Kaveri river and is visited frequently by tourists and devotees. The Karighatta temple on top of this hill is dedicated to Lord Srinivasa, an avatar of Lord Vishnu. From the serene environment of the Karighatta hill to the magnificent architecture of the temple, this place is a joyful retreat. 

Historical Significance
The historical significance of Karighatta is linked to various mythological stories. It is said that the Karighatta temple was established by sage Bhrigu and that the hill is connected to the Varhana Pura. Historically, it was an important military site during the reign of Tipu Sultan and the Mysore kingdom. 

Distance from Bangalore and Reaching Time
Karighatta is approximately 125 kms away from Bangalore and is easily accessible by road. It takes around 3 to 3.5 hours by car with other public transport options available too. It is ideal for a short weekend getaway and is well connected through the Bangalore – Mysore highway.

Best Season and Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit Karighatta is during the cooler months from October to March. The scorching sun in summer and rain showers in monsoon make the trip inconvenient. Early morning or late afternoons are the best time to visit Karighatta Hill.

  • Srirangapatna Fort : The Srirangapatna Fort located near Karighatta dates back to the 15th century. It was constructed by Timmanna Nayaka and was later revamped by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. It was used heavily as a defensive fort and its strategic location, surrounded by the Kaveri river proved to be very useful. From massive walls to numerous gates and bastions, this fort still contains old cannons and structures.
  • Ranganathaswamy Temple : Located a few kilometers from Karighatta, the Ranganathaswamy Temple is among the oldest temples in the country. It dates back to the 9th century and is a major pilgrimage site especially for all Vishnavites. A notable feature is the large gopuram that is decorated with intricate carvings of the God resting on Adisesha.
  • Gumbaz Tomb : The Gumbaz Tomb is the final resting place of Tipu Sultan, showcasing the best of Indo-Islamic style. It features an onion dome which was built in 1799 where the Sultan was buried alongside his mother and father. Located in a beautiful garden surrounded by pillars, the designs capture the blend of military and cultural love by the Sultan.
  • Mysore Palace : Belonging to the Wodeyar family, the Mysore Palace near Karighatta Hill is the best example of Indo-Saracenic architecture. The palace was built in 1897 and rebuilt in 1912 after it was destroyed in a fire. Some notable features of the palace are the Durbar Hall and Kalyana Mandapa which were used for ceremonies and royal weddings. The palace also features a bunch of paintings and beautiful architecture, making this truly fascinating.
