About Yercaud

Historical Significance

The history of Yercaud dates back to 1825 when M.D. Cockburn who was an officer and collector of the Salem District. The captivating beauty and pleasant climate made him build the first hut on these hills, followed by planting coffee. 

Distance from Bangalore and Reaching Time

Yercaud is located approximately 230 kilometers away from Bangalore. The journey by car usually takes 5 to 6 hours. There are other transport options available too which may take longer. 

Best Season and Time to Visit

This place is renowned for its cool climate, hence the months of October to March may be a good choice. Practically, there is nothing wrong with the summer months. Monsoon months may cause trouble due to the onset of rain.

  • Emerald Lake: Known to the locals as Yercaud Lake, this emerald-like water body is surrounded by many trees and plants, providing a calm environment. For visitors who would like to have a peaceful journey on serene waters amidst the beautiful surrounding hills views, boating facilities are provided at the lake. It is popular among most families and couples because its neighbouring park facilitates easy walk along with picnic activities. 
  • Lady’s Seat and Gent’s Seat: Both of these seats are magnificent viewpoints, ideal for aesthetic photographs. The lady’s seat is named after an English lady, who used to spend the majority of her time in the evening there. It offers fascinating virws of the Mettur Dam 
  • Killiyur Falls: This waterfall  is approximately 300 feet high and is astonishing especially during the monsoon rainshowers. The trek to the waterfall is suitable for beginners, testing their stamina and agility. Visitors can take a refreshing dip at the natural pool that forms at the bottom of the falls. 
  • Botanical Garden: A famous local attraction for all nature enthusiasts  in Yercaud is it’s Botanical Garden. Apart from housing various plants such as rare orchids among other medicinal herbs; its holdings provide an insight into the rich biodiversity in this region. Orchidarium here is one important site where visitors can see diverse orchid species. The educational experience is enhanced by useful directional signs and well-manitained paths.
  • Pagoda Point: The Pagoda Point, also know as the Pyramid Point, got its name from four pyramid-shaped stones arranged like a pagoda. Salem and other surrounding areas can be viewed from this place as it’s located on top of hills without any obstruction.The Pagoda Point Drive is picturesque, capturing sunrises and sunsets in their greatest element. 
  • Shevaroy Hills: The hills of Shevaroy which form a part of the Eastern Ghats, are the most outstanding characteristic of Yercaud. These hills, as high as about 1515 meters above sea level, give a complete view of the neighbouring areas and are characterized by coffee plantations, orange gardens and dense forest. There is a temple dedicated to Lord Shevaroyan on the top of the hill, attracting many devotees.
